West of 3169. In 32mm (73x) small oval with intensely bright core and stellar center. Elongated E-W. Good view of irregular, slightly ragged core at 235x. At 168x, core has 2-3 bright knots at center.

East of 3166. Larger and more diffuse than 3166, which lies 1/4 of a field away in 32mm. Dim star on E margin impairs view, but at 168x, easier to see the elongated and very mottled disk with slight stellaring at nucleus. Outer margins fade out gradually. At 235x, halo disappears, but core is better defined and has clear margins.

Makes triangle with two 6.5-7 mag stars. At 73x, round haze behind 12+ mag field star, which makes discrimination difficult. 168x shows slightly brighter round core, with no stellaring and hazy, slightly mottled round halo with a faint star on N edge. Face-on spiral indicated.

168
At 73x, elongated & somewhat irregular halo with even, smooth glow (like M-1). With direct vision, glow narrows to bright slash. In 14mm (168) with AV, halo is extensive, reaching well past a star near its edge; structure becomes discernable, and there is slight, diffuse brightening at core.

Two galaxies lying together: 3226 to N, slightly larger/brighter than 3227. Both show slight brightening at core. -27 elongated more N-s, -26 more E-W. Both are smooth, -26 a bit more so. -27 has slightly stellar central point. At 130x the surrounding oval halos seem to overlap.

(OIII)
Very blue in intense at 73x, stellar point on S margin; blinking effect with AV. Large and bright at 168x, circular with AV, but E side fades out when looked at directly. Stellar point on S. side of halo. Disk has some pretzel-like curves, esp. along W. Margin. Edges sharp and distinct. At 235 with OIII, dark curved gap N of center.

Compact, stellar point at 73x. Round halo just S of 5.5 mag star and a closer 13 mag star just to S edge of halo. At 130x, round, fairly bright, smooth small core area, feathers out to small surrounding halo. At 168x, center becomes more point-concentrated and core halo blends into outer disk. Outer margins very indistinct.
